Rachmaninoff himself is playing!
As you know, the composer himself was a virtuoso pianist. His game was recorded on the rollers of the AMPICO recorder. Wayne Shtanke scanned all the rollers on a roll scanner, recognized the image of each hole and received an electronic copy of the roll. Then, on the basis of the engineering descriptions of the process of preparing for replication, he tried to transform the image to obtain a master tape. The image of the master tape was scrolled through the mathematical model of all the cylinder pistons of the AMPICO recorder to obtain information about the movements of the pianist’s hands during recording. As a result, some information was received about the movements of the hands and feet of S. Rachmaninov, who was driven into the grand piano Bosendorfer 290 SE.
The instrument successfully reproduced the recording of its performance and this “sound” was placed in the usual acoustic manner on discs.
