November 10, 2017, after a 32-year hiatus, the legendary producer Frank Farian (Frank Farian) released a new material under the brand name Boney M. feat. Liz Mitchell and Friens. The album was called Worlsmusic For Christmas and is dedicated to the celebration of Christmas. The new album was to appear on the shelves of music stores and digital download portals last year, when Farian celebrated his 75th birthday. However, the release was postponed due to creative differences between the producer and his company-distributor Sony Music. Nevertheless, during the following months the conflict was settled and literally a week before the release of the album, Sony representatives signed with FAR Music a new long-term contract for the sale of record-label products of Farian MCI. For the sake of this delegation from the head office of Sony Music Germany specially flew to Miami (USA), where now lives Farian. A couple of years ago, the producer opened his new studio complex in the Wynwood area, which was chosen by creative bohemia. The building includes 5 studio rooms, as well as a video studio where a team of high-quality sound engineers works under the guidance of Farian both on recording new material and on remastering an extensive catalog of FAR Music / MCI.
The recording was attended by invited sessional vocalists and musicians (including the Philharmonic Orchestra and gospel choir) and members of the “classical” Boney M. Team. Leading vocals in several tracks were performed by Frank Farian and Liz Mitchell. The disc contains 17 tracks, 15 of which are painted in Christmas tones by new versions of ethnic melodies from different countries and continents, on which new texts corresponding to the theme of the holiday are laid. Also there are several original compositions. Curiously, many of the texts were written by Mary Applegate, known for her work not only with the classical composition of Boney M., but also with other artists of Farian. In addition, she worked for such a project known to us as Bad Boys Blue of other stars of the 80’s. The last 2 tracks of the album “Worldmusic for Christmas” are poppourri from the classical Christmas hits of the Boney M. sample of the 80s, the remastering of which was tracked specially for the new edition. Simultaneously, Germany also released a special 2CD release (Premium Edition), where as a bonus added a freshly compiled collection of the best Christmas hits of the classic composition of Boney M. As for the quality of the new material, it can be confidently said that Farian continues to “keep the mark” on high level, each time proving skeptics that it’s too early to write off.
Liz Mitchell, who recorded several tracks for the new project at the famous London studio Abbey Road, is due to perform with her band in the big Christmas show of German TV star Carmen Neibel, which will be shown in December. The recording of the program is scheduled for December 7 in Munich and will be held in the pavilion of the Bavaria studio. The broadcast of the recording will be carried out by the ZDF channel, which can be received in Russia from the HotBird and Astra 19’2 satellites. It is assumed that on the show Carmen Neibel (Carmen Neibel) the band Boney M. feat.Liz Mitchell will perform one of the new compositions. Before that, the artists should also appear on the traditional gala concert “Disco 80″ in Moscow. The show will be held on November 25 in the sports complex “Olympic” (in St. Petersburg, the stars of the 70’s and 80’s are waiting for December 1), and the television version will be shown on New Year’s holidays through one of the federal channels. But the likelihood that at the “Disco” Boney M. and Liz Mitchell will perform at least one thing from the new album, is extremely small.
Among all the compositions of Boney M., Christmas tracks always took a special place. The talent of the producer of the band Frank Farian as an arranger and the exquisite polyphony of Boney M. could prove that Christmas compositions can be more than just standards. The updated sound of the new edition only emphasizes this fact: the Christmas compositions performed by Boney M. are a modern classic that will never go out of style.
