Frank Bornemann about Jeanne d’Arc (translation from the official website)
Everyone knows her name, and, probably, it will remain in the memory of mankind forever. Despite the fact that we know a lot about it, it left behind many mysteries and questions, the answers to which have not yet been found.
Its almost incredible story fascinates everyone who has heard of it. Historians, writers, composers, filmmakers, scientists, doctors, psychologists, politicians and even the Catholic Church, which has a special role in the history of Joan of Arc, are constantly looking for answers to questions-who is she? It is therefore not surprising that today we are faced with seemingly endless amounts of factual and literary works, as well as countless number of films and theatrical productions with divergent opinions that try to unravel the Jeanne d’Arc phenomenon, or simply express their admiration for it, not opening the veil of secrecy, which, it seems, will remain uncovered. I tried to illustrate her short, frantic and enigmatic life path, as well as her touching destiny, as reliably and vividly as possible in the interaction of music and text.
In order to study the events and facts woven around her life and understand them, I undertook years of research. I am sure that these years were not wasted, I learned all the subtleties of her biography. For the sake of reliability, I have also included things that people have been quiet about, and which I consider necessary for the disclosure of its image. Therefore, in my work there are many facts that either have sunk into oblivion, or simply remained unnoticed in the course of history.
Now I was faced with the question of how to adequately and clearly convey the content of the story in a complex musical work? And I finally decided to lead the story from the mouth of the main character in the image of Jean de Metz, who will lead us as a reliable companion, Joan of Arc, in arms, from the beginning to the tragic end of her path.
It was difficult for me to find an adequate and convincing musical embodiment of this story, and I was forced to go beyond the limitations of music and text. My goal was not only to satisfy the listener of modern rock music, which highly appreciates more complex structures, symphonic elements and atmospheric sound collages, but also convey the meaning of the work through the content of colloquial parts, since the work of such depth should be understandable to the listener, and this meant that I had to abandon all generally accepted norms.
This meant that I would have to search for the right concept of harmony of music and text in order to convey the meaning of the work as much as possible. And I hope that I succeeded, and that after listening to the album, recorded with musicians from my band Eloy, and with the help of invited artists, I can acquaint the listener with a unique historical figure – Joan of Arc.
